Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
